Sometimes you really have to worry about how Australia is run. Be it politics, sport, general councils, whatever; sometimes things just leave you scratching you head. Such as this whopper that I’ve just seen on the SMH website (indeed I was so compelled, incensed is probably a better word, to write this straight away).
David Koch, Australian Father of the year.
I want to leave it out there so it really stands out.
Please… I am sure he is an excellent father to his children, but really. There has to be more to this then meets the eye. What will we have next, Grant Denyer as National Indigenous Affairs Australian of the Year? Andrew Johns as Drug Awareness Advocate of the Year? Perhaps, like C7, this could be a case of a ‘bidding’ war to see who can get it.
Apparently Koch was awarded this for being an ‘average guy who is proud to be a father’. If that is the case, go down to a bloody childcare facility and award it to the first bloke you see picking up his child. They would be in the same boat. To call this ‘Australian Father of the year’ is rubbish.
Last years winner, Ron Delezio, was a perfect example of who should win this award. It should be awarded to a father who has gone above and beyond, done something special. To follow him up with this is terrible. Why not George Gregan, who's son is handicapped yet is obviously a huge part of his life. It should be more special then this.
Again, I am sure Koch is an excellent father, don't think this is against that, it just should be more.
